She then taught for over nine years at the New York University School of Law and at Columbia Law School and has been a mentor to hundreds of attorneys and students as a member of the Puerto Rican and the Hispanic National Bar Associations. This wealth of experience has impressed upon her both the law’s potential, as well as its limits.

Since her nomination was announced, praise has been deafening. At the same time, however, predictable but unfounded pronouncements from the radical right are unfairly attempting to tarnish Judge Sotomayor’s reputation.

The Senate has a duty to hold thorough and fair confirmation hearings, which I expect. The American people are watching carefully to ensure that, in Senator McConnell’s words, the Senate treats Judge Sotomayor fairly.

President Obama was correct in noting that of all the candidates for the Supreme Court, Judge Sotomayor was the one who possessed the consummate legal skills combined with a wide-ranging personal and professional background. Judge Sotomayor is the best choice for our country’s next Supreme Court Justice. I hope and trust that you will enthusiastically support her nomination.

New York State's system of public defense is broken --- and we need you to speak out right away to help fix it.

People who are accused of a crime in New York and can't afford a lawyer are thrown into a system that makes a mockery of justice. Many clients -- disproportionately poor young men of color -- get only moments to speak with their lawyer before entering a plea with the judge. All too often that plea is "guilty," because their overworked defender doesn't have the time or resources to fight the case. Thankfully, former Chief Judge Judith Kaye recognized this as a crisis that fills our jails and allows for wrongful convictions. Kaye called for a politically independent commission to take the system over, putting experienced advocates for a just and efficient public defense system in charge of setting policy, enforcing standards and representing client. The Commission has the support of the New York State Bar Association and over 200 community organizations state-wide. Legislators in Albany are deciding right now whether to pass this urgent reform.

Everyone deserves quality representation in court. Can you call state leaders and the Governor? Tell them: "Judge Kaye was right -- New York needs an Independent Public Defense Commission."

Wednesday, May 20th
This Wednesday we are organizing a phone in to Governor Paterson, who sponsored single payer legislation as a State Senator. The long-delayed report by the Governor's Universal Health Care Task Force is due out shortly and we want it to recommend single payer as the New York approach. Sample message below:

Governor Paterson, 518 474-8390. "We want Gov. Paterson to recommend a single payer health care system as part of the state's report on universal health care. We also want Gov. Paterson to meet with single payer advocates on May 27th."

May 27th is our statewide lobby day and rally in Albany that we have organized in conjunction with the national day of action on single payer. We are pushing three issues on Wed. 1) have the Senate pass a resolution in support of HR 676 (the Assembly did this last year); 2) have the Senate and Assembly pass single payer legislation (A2356, S2370); 3) get legislators to sign on to a letter to Pres. Obama in support of single payer health care.

Saturday, May 30th is a national day of action around single payer. A major NY event will take place in Rochester at 6 PM with Cong. John Conyers, lead sponsor of HR 676; Cong. Eric Massa and John Nichols of the Nation. It will be at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, 657 East Ave., Rochester. Even if you plan to drive to Rochester, that leaves plenty of time to organize a press conference, vigil, forum, leafleting, tabling (at Farmers' Market, post office, etc.) in your own community.

Politicians Need to Protect the People, Not Health Insurance Companies

Supporters of a single payer Medicare for All universal health care program will rally at the State Capitol on Wednesday May 27th at noon.

Representatives of groups supporting single payer will also meet with individual state legislators throughout the day and have requested a meeting with Governor Paterson.

The groups want New York State to pass legislation to create its own single payer universal health care system. The California state legislature has twice voted to create a single payer system but it has been vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger. Governor Paterson, in contrast, has been a long time supporter of single payer health care. The long-delayed state study by the Urban Institute on what type of universal health system New York should adopt is due out in the next few months.

The single payer groups are also supporting the resolution introduced by Senator Neil Breslin to have the State Senate urge Congress to pass HR 676 (Conyors – D MI), the federal single payer bill. HR 676 is currently co-sponsored by more than 70 Representatives, including many from New York.

Single payer supporters are also upset that the U.S. Senate Finance Committee and the White House have so far refused to consider a single payer health care system while instead insisting that private for-profit health insurance must continue to play a role in any universal health care system. Thirteen single payer advocates have been arrested in recent weeks for protesting the exclusion of single payer supporters at the Senate Finance Committee hearings on universal health care.

It is estimated that as much as 35 cents of every health care dollar goes to pay for the administration of private health insurance that provides nothing of value to the health care system. The practices of insurance companies contribute to the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans annually. Eliminating private health insurance through a single payer system could save $350 to $400 billion annually.

Even though the US spends almost twice as much money per capita on health care compared to other industrial countries, the performance of the American health care system consistently ranks among the worse of the industrial countries (e.g., 37th by the World Health Organization), while leaving as many as 75 million Americans without insurance during part of any year.

Over the last few months, Grassroots Initiative has had the pleasure to work with hundreds of community groups, houses of faith, elected officials, volunteers and parent leaders to recruit candidates for this year’s historic Community and Citywide Education Council (CEC) elections in New York. There are more than 500 candidates on the ballot – 60% of whom are running for the very first time!

The elections will be history-making – marking the first public election in U.S. history to be held entirely online. These elections are also particularly important because mayoral control of schools is up for renewal in June and CECs (the former School Boards) are front and center in this debate.

In addition, we’ll need volunteers starting immediately to help hit the streets to distribute information. This is the first time that all parents with kids in NYC public schools have been able to cast a vote in CEC elections and therefore, it will take a massive community effort to make this a success.

We need your help to ensure all parents know that they have the right to vote in this important election. If you’d like to volunteer to help distribute information in your community, please just reply to this email and we’ll get you materials and connect you to other volunteers.

The Connecticut-based private equity firm Brynwood Partners, who owns Stella D'oro Biscuit Co. plant, walked out of the negotiations with its workers on August 13, 2008. Since then, the workers of Stella D'oro have been on strike in front of the Stella D'oro Bakery located in the Bronx, New York.

Brynwood Partner's demands are draconian. They want, among other things, that workers accept a 25% cut in wages; the elimination of Saturday overtime; and an increase in health insurance premiums. The company also proposes eliminating four holidays, one week of vacation, and all 12 paid sick days workers currently receive.

Please, sign Online Petition and let the owners of Stella D'oro Biscuit Co. know that you find it unconscionable they have forced their workers out on the street, in a strike, as a last resort at fair negotiations. WE DID IT! On Thursday, more than 70,000 people packed the streets of lower Manhattan, sending a loud and clear message to Governor Paterson and the legislature: We need Fair Share Tax Reform! We were joined by thousands of other people in rallies across New York State.

Now we need to "SEAL THE DEAL." Both the Senate and Assembly are finalizing their budget resolutions - making this a crucial week for ensuring that Fair Share Tax Reform is part of the budget.

Democracy for America (DFA) seeks an experienced and dynamic person for the full-time position of Communications Director. The Communications Director will report to the Executive Director and will be responsible for developing, planning, and implementing a strategic national communications plan and media outreach.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
-Develop, plan, and implement a strategic communications plan to support and highlight the work of a national organization of 725,000 members and 800 local groups.
-Conduct media outreach- pitch stories, develop relationships with reporters, write press releases and media advisories. This includes both traditional media as well as online media.
-Handle all incoming media requests
-Build and execute a media schedule for DFA's Chair and Executive Director
-Write talking points and conduct interview prep for applicable DFA staff
-Work with our national grassroots network activists to provide communications support for local DFA groups around the country
-Manage blog content and support DFA's existing online programs
-Monitor and report on DFA's press hits-Monitor and report on news stories relevant to DFA's work

Qualifications:
-The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of experience managing strategic communications and media outreach for political campaigns and/or labor, social justice, or advocacy organizations.
-Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with reporters.
-Familiarity and ability to work with new media.-Ability to produce well-written materials under pressure of deadlines.
-Ability to multitask and handle many ongoing projects at once.-Should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
-Flexibility, political savvy, and grace under pressure are crucial.
-Experience managing candidates or executives is a plus.
-Willingness to work long hours and occasional weekends.

The position is located in Burlington, Vermont but the position will require travel for media events, conventions, and to staff the Chair or Executive Director. Salary commensurate with experience.

Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) is a transnational network of more than 500 grantmakers, donors, and philanthropic leaders committed to Latino communities in the United States and Latin America. HIP designs and manages wide-impact, multi-site philanthropic programs for institutional funders and provides philanthropic services to individuals. Through its award-winning Funders' Collaborative, HIP has strengthened the capacity of more than 475 grassroots Latino nonprofits and leaders through grants and trainings. In Latin America, HIP funds community-based economic development projects that draw upon the resources of the Latino diaspora. HIP's Giving Partnerships work in collaboration with community foundations to increase the participation of Latino individual donors in philanthropy. HIP also leads policy initiatives to raise awareness of key issues in Latino communities, such as its current campaign for the human rights of unaccompanied migrant children.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Program Manager works in collaboration with the Northeast Program Director to lead all HIP activities in the Northeast region, including the management of three to five HIP sites. Presently, the Senior Program Manager is responsible for leadership of four sites: Connecticut, Massachusetts/Rhode Island, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Areas of responsibility include managing HIP's collaborative grantmaking programs; working with the Northeast Director and fundraising staff to raise local funds for the Collaborative; developing and managing workshops, convenings, technical assistance programs, and resource-sharing programs for grantees and other Latino nonprofits; planning special events; supporting membership outreach, development, and services; and collaborating in the development of HIP's long-term strategy and planning for the Northeast Region.

The Senior Program Manager reports to the Northeast Program Director and supervises one to two program coordinators, based in HIP's Northeast regional office in New York City. The Senior Program Manager is an essential part of HIP's Northeast team, with primary responsibility for leading HIP's grantmaking initiatives in the region.

The Senior Program Manager may be based in New York (the location of HIP's Northeast Regional Office) or in the Washington, D.C. area. The position may include exploring and building partnerships and relationships with leading governmental and international institutions in the area, such as the incoming Obama administration, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Inter-American Foundation, and the World Bank. This position is currently being offered on a part-time basis, at 30 hours per week.

Specific duties include the following:

Funders' Collaborative for Strong Latino Communities
The Senior Program Manager has the following responsibilities for all sites under his or her purview:

• Oversee the grantmaking process for each site, with the support of the Program Coordinator(s).
• Serve as primary liaison for the local site committee of funding partners.
• Lead applicant information sessions for potential grant applicants.
• Oversee technical assistance to grant applicants during the grant application process.• Oversee development and design of grantee workshops/convenings.
• Work collaboratively with local site chair and other funding partners to plan and facilitate grant review process, including grant allocations meetings.
• Oversee monitoring and reporting on grantee progress throughout the year, including analysis and summary of final grant reports.
• At the national level, work with program staff in other sites to continually improve the program through documenting of best practices and strengthening of grantmaking systems.• Work collaboratively with other staff to implement national initiatives, including leadership conference and program evaluation.Fundraising and Communications
• Develop and manage relationships with funders, members, and prospects in HIP's Northeast sites
• Oversee development of site-specific content on grant proposals and reports.
• Oversee identification and documentation of grantee success stories for wider promotion and dissemination to HIP members and partners.
• Develop press releases and generate media coverage for all grant rounds and events.Membership and Events
• Support the planning and implementation of key HIP events in the Northeast.
• Support local membership chapters and member-volunteers in developing mission-driven programming (networking, issue-based, educational).
• Work to identify, recruit and retain institutional and individual members.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Six to ten years experience in strategic grantmaking and/or nonprofit management.• High level of verbal and written communication skills.
• Candidate must have an ability to be focused and detailed, meet deadlines and juggle multiple tasks, be organized and effective, and work as part of a team, while maintaining the big picture and a sense of humor.
• Experience working with both funding institutions and grassroots leaders.
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
• Demonstrated proficiency in a Windows environment, including word processing, database and spreadsheet work.

New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) is a community-based, non-profit organization that works to ensure that new immigrants can build social, political and economic power in their communities and beyond. In our Jackson Heights office NICE works primarily with low-wage recent immigrants who are day laborers, domestic workers and restaurant/deli workers. As recent immigrants, many of NICE's community members lack information regarding their rights as immigrants and workers, as well as their right to access basic services, such as health care, education, and financial services. NICE addresses issues faced by its community members through a variety of strategies, such as direct services – including rights-based English literacy classes, social work services, and assistance with non-payment of wages - and though community-building, grassroots organizing and grassroots advocacy.

NICE seeks a full-time Social Work Program Coordinator will be responsible for all aspects of NICE’s social work services including: (1) Program coordination, administration and development, (2) Case management, counseling and direct service to clients (3) Developing and coordinating monthly workshops and clinics (4) Coordinating one to two support groups or organizing committees (e.i: Women’s Committee, Men’s Committee or Workers Committee) (5) Maintaining records and files in accordance with the requirements of the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), our primary social work funder.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Meet with individuals for Case Management and Referrals. This includes assessment, developing a relationship, follow-up, evaluation, and completion of a work plan. Keep updated folders with case notes and register individuals as DYCD participants.
Meet individuals in a group setting for group help and group therapy.
Coordinate and run monthly Educational Workshops for NICE community and larger immigrant community.
Coordinate and run Legal Clinics (Immigration Law, Employment Law and Consumer Law) with legal service partner organizations.
Work as part of a staff team to incorporate Social Work services into NICE’s membership structure.
Complete Quarterly Reports for DYCD
Develop relationships with service providers in Queens and throughout NYC, specifically agencies that work with immigrant populations. Network and grow the program and build opportunities for program collaboration between NICE and other organizations.
Become a task supervisor for Social Work interns, and possibly a SIFI (Seminar in Field Instruction) supervisor, if candidate is SIFI certified.
Supervise volunteers and staff involved in Social Work projects.

Qualifications:
Must have a degree in social work or be working towards a degree in social work or similar field.
Must have a commitment to social justice and to immigrant and workers rights.
Must have experience in working with immigrant families and/or high needs communities.
Must be bilingual, English/Spanish.
Must be organized and able to multitask.
Must be willing to work evening and weekend hours.
Must make a one year commitment to NICE, two years preferable.
Salary: Depends on Experience.

In case you are not aware, your insurance company can place a monetary limit on the amount of benefits you can receive. So if you ever suffer a catastrophic illness or have a chronic illness, you can run out of benefits pretty quick. Click for more details...
