The amendment will bar new naturalized citizens for the first 5 years of their citizenship from access to programs in health equity initiatives and community health programs. For example, it could endanger children's access to school based health services. This is a dangerous attempt to create two classes of citizenship in America and it is unacceptable.

I want to tell Sen. Dodd to oppose the Enzi amendment which would bar naturalized citizens from accessing health services for their first five years of citizenship. We cannot allow health reform to be undermined by baseless attacks against immigrants. Our focus should be on enacting affordable, quality health care. Immigrants and new citizens are our friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors--and are living and working in and contributing to our communities. Like everyone else, immigrants want the chance to pay their fair share for quality, affordable health care. "

EJEMPLO:
Mi nombre es_________ y estoy llamando desde_________. Quiero decirle a Sen.

Thank you!
Sara Cullinane
Health Care Advocate
Facilitated Enrollment Program
Small Business United for Health Care
Make the Road New York
301 Grove St.
Brooklyn, NY 11237
718.418.7651 ext. 238 (tel)
718.418.9635 (fax)

Health Care Reform Rally & Town Hall in Washington, D.C. - June 25

RSVP: Sign-up at http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/healthcareorganizingkickoff/gpcg3v AND Email Naomi.Rothwell@gmail.com

Our voice, strength and support in behalf of real health care reform is urgently needed. It will also help to email Naomi.Rothwell@gmail.com to confirm you've done this:
http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/healthcareorganizingkickoff/gpcg3v

The battle for real health care reform has begun. President Obama's plan, making good on his campaign commitment, has now come under fierce attack from the same entrenched forces that have prevented real reform from happening for more than 50 years. Here's a story from today's NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/12/us/politics/12obama.html?_r=1&ref=us

It is time for the voice of the people to be heard. On June 25 thousands of people will descend on Washington to rally and then meet with their Congressional representatives. For us in NY that means town hall meetings with Senators Schumer and Gillebrand and the House NY Congressional delegation. This is the only way we are going to win this battle, by mobilizing the way we did to get Barack Obama elected President. He told us we were going to have to do this--and now is the time.

You can learn more about what's happening in Washington on June 25 by going here:
http://www.healthcare09.org/

But if you wait to reserve a seat, there is a good chance it will be too late. (You can still go of course, but it may cost money). Please remember to include your phone number and email. Upon graduation she went to work as an Assistant Manhattan District Attorney under the legendary Robert Morgenthau, prosecuting criminal defendants. She later became a partner at the international firm of Pavia & Harcourt.

Judge Sotomayor’s legal career has included not only criminal prosecution and commercial litigation, but also academia and appointment to the federal bench at the age of thirty-eight. For the past ten years, her intellect, integrity, and consensus-building have made her a highly respected jurist on the Second Circuit. This followed a distinguished career as a federal trial judge, during which Judge Sotomayor’s pragmatism and resolve brought the national baseball strike to an end that satisfied all parties. She then taught for over nine years at the New York University School of Law and at Columbia Law School and has been a mentor to hundreds of attorneys and students as a member of the Puerto Rican and the Hispanic National Bar Associations. This wealth of experience has impressed upon her both the law’s potential, as well as its limits.

Since her nomination was announced, praise has been deafening. At the same time, however, predictable but unfounded pronouncements from the radical right are unfairly attempting to tarnish Judge Sotomayor’s reputation.

The Senate has a duty to hold thorough and fair confirmation hearings, which I expect. The American people are watching carefully to ensure that, in Senator McConnell’s words, the Senate treats Judge Sotomayor fairly.

President Obama was correct in noting that of all the candidates for the Supreme Court, Judge Sotomayor was the one who possessed the consummate legal skills combined with a wide-ranging personal and professional background. Judge Sotomayor is the best choice for our country’s next Supreme Court Justice. I hope and trust that you will enthusiastically support her nomination.

Sincerely,
[Insert name and signature]
Cc: Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee
Hon. Key points to stress are:
Judge Sotomayor’s record of achievement, including her stellar education and substantial experience as a highly respected jurist in the Second Circuit and as a trial judge in the Southern District of New York;
Sotomayor's accomplishments as a litigator in an international law firm;

Sotomayor’s accomplishments as a former Manhattan Assistant District Attorney under Robert Morgenthau.
2. Hit the following link http://www.abanet.org/publiced/hispanic_s.html to learn more about Judge Sotomayor’s background.

3. Address the letter your two Senators with cc to the Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick J. Leahy and Ranking Member Jeff Sessions and then send by fax. You can obtain contact details for your Senator directly by consulting the Senate directory: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm?OrderBy=state&Sort=ASC

Senate Judiciary Leaders
Honorable Patrick J. Email is not the best method for submitting a letter of support and regular mail can take a very long time to arrive due to security concerns. Make sure you fax the letter to your home state federal Senators and the Senators of the Judiciary Committee.

Please help fix New York State's broken defense system!

Dear friends,

New York State's system of public defense is broken --- and we need you to speak out right away to help fix it.

People who are accused of a crime in New York and can't afford a lawyer are thrown into a system that makes a mockery of justice. Many clients -- disproportionately poor young men of color -- get only moments to speak with their lawyer before entering a plea with the judge. All too often that plea is "guilty," because their overworked defender doesn't have the time or resources to fight the case. Thankfully, former Chief Judge Judith Kaye recognized this as a crisis that fills our jails and allows for wrongful convictions. Kaye called for a politically independent commission to take the system over, putting experienced advocates for a just and efficient public defense system in charge of setting policy, enforcing standards and representing client. The Commission has the support of the New York State Bar Association and over 200 community organizations state-wide. Legislators in Albany are deciding right now whether to pass this urgent reform.

Everyone deserves quality representation in court. Can you call state leaders and the Governor? Tell them: "Judge Kaye was right -- New York needs an Independent Public Defense Commission."

Here's where to call:
State Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith -- (518) 455-2701
Governor David Paterson -- (518) 474-8390
State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver -- (518) 455-3791

Thanks in advance for reaching out. May 20th call in to Governor Paterson on single payer
2) Wed. May 27th lobby day and rally for single payer in Albany
3) Sat. May 30th.-Organize a local event in support of single payer health care and Rochester Town Hall Meeting 6pm-8pm.

All of these activities take money, it is crucial to build momentum for the grassroots movement now. Please make a contribution today to Single Payer New York. Checks can be mailed to our treasurer, Connie Laporta, 1935 Fifth St., Troy, NY 12180.

Wednesday, May 20th
This Wednesday we are organizing a phone in to Governor Paterson, who sponsored single payer legislation as a State Senator. The long-delayed report by the Governor's Universal Health Care Task Force is due out shortly and we want it to recommend single payer as the New York approach. Sample message below:

Governor Paterson, 518 474-8390. "We want Gov. Paterson to recommend a single payer health care system as part of the state's report on universal health care. We also want Gov. Paterson to meet with single payer advocates on May 27th."

May 27th is our statewide lobby day and rally in Albany that we have organized in conjunction with the national day of action on single payer. We are pushing three issues on Wed. 1) have the Senate pass a resolution in support of HR 676 (the Assembly did this last year); 2) have the Senate and Assembly pass single payer legislation (A2356, S2370); 3) get legislators to sign on to a letter to Pres. Obama in support of single payer health care.

Details about the day are below. It starts at 9:30 AM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 85 Chestnut St. (1/2 block from State Capitol). Let dunleamark@aol.com know if you are coming and whether you would like to carpool.

Saturday, May 30th is a national day of action around single payer. A major NY event will take place in Rochester at 6 PM with Cong. John Conyers, lead sponsor of HR 676; Cong. Eric Massa and John Nichols of the Nation. It will be at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, 657 East Ave., Rochester. Even if you plan to drive to Rochester, that leaves plenty of time to organize a press conference, vigil, forum, leafleting, tabling (at Farmers' Market, post office, etc.) in your own community.

May 30th: National Day of Action
Nationwide Rallies for Improved Medicare for AllJoin thousands of single-payer supporters in a nationwide week of action to support improved Medicare for all (HR 676). Single-payer activists will be gathering all over the country to say, "Healthcare, yes; Insurance companies, no," and to show solidarity with demonstrations at the AHIP (American Health Insurance Plans, a private health insurance lobby) conference in San Diego. If an action isn't already in your city, plan your own day of action! It can be a town hall meeting, demonstration in front of a local insurance company, film showing, vigil, or your own unique idea. Let us know what you'd like to start planning by contacting info@healthcare-now.org.47 million Americans are uninsured. Private insurance rates are rising faster than inflation and our incomes. By 2025 the cost of private health insurance will exceed our projected income.A national, single-payer healthcare system is the only healthcare reform option that will cover every American resident while saving us billions of dollars. The majority of Americans want it. The majority of physicians want it. The only thing missing is the political will in Washington. Single Payer Healthcare Advocates to Rally at Capitol on May 27th

Politicians Need to Protect the People, Not Health Insurance Companies

Supporters of a single payer Medicare for All universal health care program will rally at the State Capitol on Wednesday May 27th at noon.

Representatives of groups supporting single payer will also meet with individual state legislators throughout the day and have requested a meeting with Governor Paterson.

The groups want New York State to pass legislation to create its own single payer universal health care system. The California state legislature has twice voted to create a single payer system but it has been vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger. Governor Paterson, in contrast, has been a long time supporter of single payer health care. The long-delayed state study by the Urban Institute on what type of universal health system New York should adopt is due out in the next few months.

The single payer groups are also supporting the resolution introduced by Senator Neil Breslin to have the State Senate urge Congress to pass HR 676 (Conyors – D MI), the federal single payer bill. HR 676 is currently co-sponsored by more than 70 Representatives, including many from New York.

Single payer supporters are also upset that the U.S. Senate Finance Committee and the White House have so far refused to consider a single payer health care system while instead insisting that private for-profit health insurance must continue to play a role in any universal health care system. Thirteen single payer advocates have been arrested in recent weeks for protesting the exclusion of single payer supporters at the Senate Finance Committee hearings on universal health care.

It is estimated that as much as 35 cents of every health care dollar goes to pay for the administration of private health insurance that provides nothing of value to the health care system. The practices of insurance companies contribute to the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans annually. Eliminating private health insurance through a single payer system could save $350 to $400 billion annually.

Even though the US spends almost twice as much money per capita on health care compared to other industrial countries, the performance of the American health care system consistently ranks among the worse of the industrial countries (e.g., 37th by the World Health Organization), while leaving as many as 75 million Americans without insurance during part of any year.

Sponsors of the event include Single Payer New York (www.singlepayernewyork.org), Capital District Alliance for Universal Health Care, Capital District Area Labor Federation; Faith and Hunger Network; Hunger Action Network of NYS: New York State Nurses Association; Physicians for a National Health Program; Students for a National Health Program; Tompkins County Health Care Task Force; and Troy Area Labor Council.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://latinos4change.blogspot.com/2009/05/single-payer-call-in-may-20-lobby-and.html' title='Single Payer: Call-in May 20; He served as a trustee of The New School and a board member of Milano. This forum series, which pays tribute to his deep commitment to bipartisanship, is generously funded by the Taconic Foundation, on whose board he also served.

Additional support provided by the Sirus Fund and the Milano Foundation.

For more than 30 years, Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy has offered sharply focused programs in management and public policy that are innovative, principled, and practical--in keeping with the mission of The New School and Milano's own values and purpose.

The Center for New York City Affairs is a nonpartisan institute dedicated to advancing innovative public policies that strengthen neighborhoods, support families and reduce urban poverty. There are more than 500 candidates on the ballot – 60% of whom are running for the very first time!

The elections will be history-making – marking the first public election in U.S. history to be held entirely online. These elections are also particularly important because mayoral control of schools is up for renewal in June and CECs (the former School Boards) are front and center in this debate.

In addition, we’ll need volunteers starting immediately to help hit the streets to distribute information. This is the first time that all parents with kids in NYC public schools have been able to cast a vote in CEC elections and therefore, it will take a massive community effort to make this a success.

We need your help to ensure all parents know that they have the right to vote in this important election. If you’d like to volunteer to help distribute information in your community, please just reply to this email and we’ll get you materials and connect you to other volunteers.

Thanks for your continued support and partnership. We've already raised significant funding, hired key personnel and will be receiving some very exciting endorsements in the next 2 weeks. But the reports are in: developers and corporate interests are already pouring money into this race. However, I have something more powerful on my side: You.

As you may know, our first filing deadline is this Wednesday, March 11, and I have asked my friends to help me make an impressive showing. If we raise $25,000 by that date we will trigger unions and high-profile individuals to come on board and join this campaign. Our chances of reaching that total by the March 11 are excellent. To contribute download and complete the contribution form from our site, or call us at (718) 512-8656 and a form can be sent to you. If you prefer we can make arrangements to pick up your contribution at your home or place of business.

I hope you share this message with your friends, family and neighbors. Working together, we can have people-backed candidates just as we have - finally - a President for the people.

In these very difficult economic times I know that your contribution - no matter how great or modest - is a sacrifice. Thanks again for your time, generosity and support. I look forward to speaking with you over the next few days about making this campaign our success.
