Over the last few months, Grassroots Initiative has had the pleasure to work with hundreds of community groups, houses of faith, elected officials, volunteers and parent leaders to recruit candidates for this year’s historic Community and Citywide Education Council (CEC) elections in New York. There are more than 500 candidates on the ballot – 60% of whom are running for the very first time!

The elections will be history-making – marking the first public election in U.S. history to be held entirely online. These elections are also particularly important because mayoral control of schools is up for renewal in June and CECs (the former School Boards) are front and center in this debate.

In addition, we’ll need volunteers starting immediately to help hit the streets to distribute information. This is the first time that all parents with kids in NYC public schools have been able to cast a vote in CEC elections and therefore, it will take a massive community effort to make this a success.

We need your help to ensure all parents know that they have the right to vote in this important election. If you’d like to volunteer to help distribute information in your community, please just reply to this email and we’ll get you materials and connect you to other volunteers.

We are deeply concerned that today, March 10, 2009 the Senate may be deciding to restore very little of the Governor’s proposed cuts to health care services. Your active outreach today to your Senator is critical.

• I am deeply concerned that the Senate may be considering goingalong with much of Governor Paterson’s dangerous cuts to quality carein New York. The senate cannot pass a one house bill withoutincreasing revenue.

• It is vital to my community that the Senate fully restores theMedicaid cuts to health care providers in New York. And use thefederal assistance available to New York State over the next twoyears. There is no excuse for allowing cuts to go through that willhurt patients and threaten care.
