UNITED, WE WALK FOR REFORM
UNITY WALK AND RALLY FOR HEALTH CARE
2 PM Rally at Times Square, 42nd St. and 7th Avenue
Health reform is finally within grasp. Opponents are spending millions every day to destroy it. We cannot let this happen. We voted for change in '08 and we must see it through.
On Saturday, August 29, 2009, New Yorkers will walk from all parts of the city for the first ever United We Walk for Reform Rally in support of the historic health reform legislation before Congress.
It's our health care. It's our time. Save the date to make your voice heard.
MID-MORNING, ACROSS THE CITY: Grassroots groups will meet in front of hospitals and health clinics across the city to walk to rally at Times Square. Check out mybarackobama.com for meeting locations in the next week (or set up one of your own).
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM - UNITY RALLY: Rally for health care at Times Square, 42nd St. and 7th Avenue
WANT TO ORGANIZE YOUR OWN WALK TO THE RALLY? IT'S EASY...
1) List your "United, We Walk for Health Care Reform" event on mybarackobama.com and spread the word to your friends.
2) To calculate the time you'll need to get to Times Square, we recommend hopstop.com.
3) Have fun and bring banners, wear t-shirts and buttons. Be creative!
4) Remind people to use sidewalks and bring posterboard signs (nothing on sticks).
5) Email me detail to Annelisa@Latinos4Change.com if you'd like to invite to all Latinos 4 Change members.
Thank you for being a leader for health care reform. This can't happen without you!

Action alert: TODAY on anti-immigrant/anti-new citizen amendment in health care reform proposed by U.S. Senators
Hi all,
Hola a todos
We need your help to defeat an anti-immigrant amendment proposed by Senators Hatch (UT) and Enzi (WY) on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee (HELP). The amendment will bar new naturalized citizens for the first 5 years of their citizenship from access to programs in health equity initiatives and community health programs. For example, it could endanger children's access to school based health services. This is a dangerous attempt to create two classes of citizenship in America and it is unacceptable.
Please call Senator Chris Dodd (a leader of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension committee) of Connecticut @ 202-224-2823 TODAY.
Favor de llamar al Senador Dodd (un lder del Comit HELP en el Senado) de Connecticut a 202-224-2823 HOY!
Please call Sen. Dodd TODAY and tell him to OPPOSE the Hatch/Enzi amendment.
"My name is_________ and I'm calling from___________. I want to tell Sen. Dodd to oppose the Enzi amendment which would bar naturalized citizens from accessing health services for their first five years of citizenship. We cannot allow health reform to be undermined by baseless attacks against immigrants. Our focus should be on enacting affordable, quality health care. Immigrants and new citizens are our friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors--and are living and working in and contributing to our communities. Like everyone else, immigrants want the chance to pay their fair share for quality, affordable health care. "
EJEMPLO:
Mi nombre es_________ y estoy llamando desde_________. Quiero decirle a Sen.
Thank you!

"We Can’t Wait for Health Care"
Rally and Town Hall for Health Care in Washington, DC
If you want to get a seat at no charge on a bus going to Washington on June 25 for the big rally and lobbying day for health care reform, you need to reserve now by going to this link, giving your name, phone number, email, and mentioning Latinos 4 Change/ NY Latinos for Obama on this link. It will also help to email Naomi.Rothwell@gmail.com to confirm you've done this:

The battle for real health care reform has begun. President Obama's plan, making good on his campaign commitment, has now come under fierce attack from the same entrenched forces that have prevented real reform from happening for more than 50 years. Here's a story from today's NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/12/us/politics/12obama.html?_r=1&ref=us
It is time for the voice of the people to be heard. On June 25 thousands of people will descend on Washington to rally and then meet with their Congressional representatives. For us in NY that means town hall meetings with Senators Schumer and Gillebrand and the House NY Congressional delegation. This is the only way we are going to win this battle, by mobilizing the way we did to get Barack Obama elected President. He told us we were going to have to do this--and now is the time.
You can learn more about what's happening in Washington on June 25 by going here:
http://www.healthcare09.org/
But if you wait to reserve a seat, there is a good chance it will be too late. (You can still go of course, but it may cost money). Please remember to include your phone number and email. Here's the link again:

Calling All Supporters -- We Urge You to Write Your Senators in Support of Sotomayor!
To ensure a smooth and bi-partisan Senate confirmation, we urge you to write to your Senators, copying the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, in support of Judge Sotomayor.
Dear [Insert Your Senator's Name]:
President Obama made an inspired choice in his nomination of the Honorable Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court.
Judge Sotomayor’s personal and professional experiences make her uniquely sensitive and qualified to address the concerns of all Americans.
Raised by a widowed mother in a Bronx housing project, she worked hard to graduate summa cum laude from Princeton and to become an editor of the Yale Law Journal. Upon graduation she went to work as an Assistant Manhattan District Attorney under the legendary Robert Morgenthau, prosecuting criminal defendants. She later became a partner at the international firm of Pavia & Harcourt.
Judge Sotomayor’s legal career has included not only criminal prosecution and commercial litigation, but also academia and appointment to the federal bench at the age of thirty-eight. For the past ten years, her intellect, integrity, and consensus-building have made her a highly respected jurist on the Second Circuit. This followed a distinguished career as a federal trial judge, during which Judge Sotomayor’s pragmatism and resolve brought the national baseball strike to an end that satisfied all parties. She then taught for over nine years at the New York University School of Law and at Columbia Law School and has been a mentor to hundreds of attorneys and students as a member of the Puerto Rican and the Hispanic National Bar Associations. This wealth of experience has impressed upon her both the law’s potential, as well as its limits.
Since her nomination was announced, praise has been deafening. At the same time, however, predictable but unfounded pronouncements from the radical right are unfairly attempting to tarnish Judge Sotomayor’s reputation.
The Senate has a duty to hold thorough and fair confirmation hearings, which I expect. The American people are watching carefully to ensure that, in Senator McConnell’s words, the Senate treats Judge Sotomayor fairly.
President Obama was correct in noting that of all the candidates for the Supreme Court, Judge Sotomayor was the one who possessed the consummate legal skills combined with a wide-ranging personal and professional background. Judge Sotomayor is the best choice for our country’s next Supreme Court Justice. I hope and trust that you will enthusiastically support her nomination.
Sincerely,

Below are some basic instructions for preparing and sending a letter of support in order to ensure the letter is properly received:
1. Use the template above or write a persuasive, professional letter making the case for why you believe that Judge Sotomayor would make for an outstanding Supreme Court Justice. Key points to stress are:
Judge Sotomayor’s record of achievement, including her stellar education and substantial experience as a highly respected jurist in the Second Circuit and as a trial judge in the Southern District of New York;
Sotomayor's accomplishments as a litigator in an international law firm;
Sotomayor’s accomplishments as a former Manhattan Assistant District Attorney under Robert Morgenthau.

Please help fix New York State's broken defense system!
Dear friends,
New York State's system of public defense is broken --- and we need you to speak out right away to help fix it.
People who are accused of a crime in New York and can't afford a lawyer are thrown into a system that makes a mockery of justice. Many clients -- disproportionately poor young men of color -- get only moments to speak with their lawyer before entering a plea with the judge. All too often that plea is "guilty," because their overworked defender doesn't have the time or resources to fight the case. Thankfully, former Chief Judge Judith Kaye recognized this as a crisis that fills our jails and allows for wrongful convictions. Kaye called for a politically independent commission to take the system over, putting experienced advocates for a just and efficient public defense system in charge of setting policy, enforcing standards and representing client. The Commission has the support of the New York State Bar Association and over 200 community organizations state-wide. Legislators in Albany are deciding right now whether to pass this urgent reform.
Everyone deserves quality representation in court. Can you call state leaders and the Governor? Tell them: "Judge Kaye was right -- New York needs an Independent Public Defense Commission."
Here's where to call:
State Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith -- (518) 455-2701
Governor David Paterson -- (518) 474-8390
State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver -- (518) 455-3791
Thanks in advance for reaching out. To learn more about the campaign and how to help, head to www.NewYorkJusticeFund.org/action.htm. Together we're going to win this fight, and help make New York's public defense system something we can be proud of.

Wednesday, May 20th
This Wednesday we are organizing a phone in to Governor Paterson, who sponsored single payer legislation as a State Senator. The long-delayed report by the Governor's Universal Health Care Task Force is due out shortly and we want it to recommend single payer as the New York approach. Sample message below:
Governor Paterson, 518 474-8390. "We want Gov. Paterson to recommend a single payer health care system as part of the state's report on universal health care. We also want Gov. Paterson to meet with single payer advocates on May 27th."
May 27th is our statewide lobby day and rally in Albany that we have organized in conjunction with the national day of action on single payer. We are pushing three issues on Wed. 1) have the Senate pass a resolution in support of HR 676 (the Assembly did this last year); 2) have the Senate and Assembly pass single payer legislation (A2356, S2370); 3) get legislators to sign on to a letter to Pres. Obama in support of single payer health care.
Details about the day are below. It starts at 9:30 AM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 85 Chestnut St. (1/2 block from State Capitol). Let dunleamark@aol.com know if you are coming and whether you would like to carpool.
Saturday, May 30th is a national day of action around single payer. A major NY event will take place in Rochester at 6 PM with Cong. John Conyers, lead sponsor of HR 676; Cong. Eric Massa and John Nichols of the Nation. It will be at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, 657 East Ave., Rochester. Even if you plan to drive to Rochester, that leaves plenty of time to organize a press conference, vigil, forum, leafleting, tabling (at Farmers' Market, post office, etc.) in your own community.
May 30th: National Day of Action
Nationwide Rallies for Improved Medicare for AllJoin thousands of single-payer supporters in a nationwide week of action to support improved Medicare for all (HR 676). Single-payer activists will be gathering all over the country to say, "Healthcare, yes; Insurance companies, no," and to show solidarity with demonstrations at the AHIP (American Health Insurance Plans, a private health insurance lobby) conference in San Diego. If an action isn't already in your city, plan your own day of action! It can be a town hall meeting, demonstration in front of a local insurance company, film showing, vigil, or your own unique idea. Let us know what you'd like to start planning by contacting info@healthcare-now.org.47 million Americans are uninsured. Private insurance rates are rising faster than inflation and our incomes. By 2025 the cost of private health insurance will exceed our projected income.A national, single-payer healthcare system is the only healthcare reform option that will cover every American resident while saving us billions of dollars. The majority of Americans want it. The majority of physicians want it. The only thing missing is the political will in Washington. Single Payer Healthcare Advocates to Rally at Capitol on May 27th
Politicians Need to Protect the People, Not Health Insurance Companies
Supporters of a single payer Medicare for All universal health care program will rally at the State Capitol on Wednesday May 27th at noon.
Representatives of groups supporting single payer will also meet with individual state legislators throughout the day and have requested a meeting with Governor Paterson.
The groups want New York State to pass legislation to create its own single payer universal health care system. The California state legislature has twice voted to create a single payer system but it has been vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger. Governor Paterson, in contrast, has been a long time supporter of single payer health care. The long-delayed state study by the Urban Institute on what type of universal health system New York should adopt is due out in the next few months.
The single payer groups are also supporting the resolution introduced by Senator Neil Breslin to have the State Senate urge Congress to pass HR 676 (Conyors – D MI), the federal single payer bill. HR 676 is currently co-sponsored by more than 70 Representatives, including many from New York.
Single payer supporters are also upset that the U.S. Senate Finance Committee and the White House have so far refused to consider a single payer health care system while instead insisting that private for-profit health insurance must continue to play a role in any universal health care system. Thirteen single payer advocates have been arrested in recent weeks for protesting the exclusion of single payer supporters at the Senate Finance Committee hearings on universal health care.
It is estimated that as much as 35 cents of every health care dollar goes to pay for the administration of private health insurance that provides nothing of value to the health care system. The practices of insurance companies contribute to the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans annually. Eliminating private health insurance through a single payer system could save $350 to $400 billion annually.
Even though the US spends almost twice as much money per capita on health care compared to other industrial countries, the performance of the American health care system consistently ranks among the worse of the industrial countries (e.g., 37th by the World Health Organization), while leaving as many as 75 million Americans without insurance during part of any year.
Sponsors of the event include Single Payer New York (www.singlepayernewyork.org), Capital District Alliance for Universal Health Care, Capital District Area Labor Federation; Faith and Hunger Network; Hunger Action Network of NYS: New York State Nurses Association; Physicians for a National Health Program; Students for a National Health Program; Tompkins County Health Care Task Force; and Troy Area Labor Council.

He served as a trustee of The New School and a board member of Milano. This forum series, which pays tribute to his deep commitment to bipartisanship, is generously funded by the Taconic Foundation, on whose board he also served.

Volunteers Wanted- CEC
Over the last few months, Grassroots Initiative has had the pleasure to work with hundreds of community groups, houses of faith, elected officials, volunteers and parent leaders to recruit candidates for this year’s historic Community and Citywide Education Council (CEC) elections in New York. There are more than 500 candidates on the ballot – 60% of whom are running for the very first time!
The elections will be history-making – marking the first public election in U.S. history to be held entirely online. These elections are also particularly important because mayoral control of schools is up for renewal in June and CECs (the former School Boards) are front and center in this debate.
In addition, we’ll need volunteers starting immediately to help hit the streets to distribute information. This is the first time that all parents with kids in NYC public schools have been able to cast a vote in CEC elections and therefore, it will take a massive community effort to make this a success.
We need your help to ensure all parents know that they have the right to vote in this important election. If you’d like to volunteer to help distribute information in your community, please just reply to this email and we’ll get you materials and connect you to other volunteers.
Thanks for your continued support and partnership. For a sneak peak of the new PSA on these historic elections, follow this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfQby5BaYfQ

The Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building - Plaza
Continuing Steps Toward Ongoing Commitment to Our Community and Our Nation
"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane." -Martin Luther King, Jr.
Friends and neighbors,
The availability, the expense and the inadequacies of health care in America are a national disgrace. We worked hard to elect an Administration that is responsive to the needs of everyday Americans. The next stage requires that we continue our call that health care in America is regarded as a human right.
Many of the grassroots organizers that banded together to make the Obama campaign in the State of New York happen are now mobilizing under the network New Yorkers for Change. We are making the statement that national health care is a national imperative and we feel that there is no more appropriate place to make our stand than in Harlem.
Join us. Bring your family. Bring your friends, neighbors and coworkers. Please forward and distribute the flier below. To make change, we must make our stand.
As Barack Obama said himself, change in health care "requires a mobilization of energy of the American people to insist on a Congress and a White House that are actually going to deliver this time."

Stella D’Oro workers have been on strike for over 7 months against the vicious Wall St.vulture-capitalists Brynwood Partners, who bought the company in 2006 and are now trying to bust the union by slashing wages, pensions, holidays, and sick pay. They are running the plant with scabs. The NLRB prosecutor has said that the case against Brynwood has merit and will bring it forward.

Join Us In Supporting Stella D'oro Workers - Please sign petition & Spread the word!!!
The Connecticut-based private equity firm Brynwood Partners, who owns Stella D'oro Biscuit Co. plant, walked out of the negotiations with its workers on August 13, 2008. Since then, the workers of Stella D'oro have been on strike in front of the Stella D'oro Bakery located in the Bronx, New York.
Brynwood Partner's demands are draconian. They want, among other things, that workers accept a 25% cut in wages; the elimination of Saturday overtime; and an increase in health insurance premiums. The company also proposes eliminating four holidays, one week of vacation, and all 12 paid sick days workers currently receive.
Please, sign Online Petition and let the owners of Stella D'oro Biscuit Co. know that you find it unconscionable they have forced their workers out on the street, in a strike, as a last resort at fair negotiations. By signing the petition, which the Committee in Support of the Stella D'oro Strikers will deliver to Brynwood Parnters in Connecticut, you will show your support of the boycott of ALL Stella D'oro products until the strike is over and until the workers have received a fair settlement of their grievances. Thank you for your support of the workers. This is the link for the petition online:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/63/support-the-stella-doro-workers-on-strike
Below is the letter that will be delivered and will accompany the petition with your signatures:

The company also proposes eliminating four holidays, one week of vacation, and all 12 paid sick days workers currently receive.
We are writing to you, Brynwood Partners and Stella D'oro Biscuit Co., on behalf of the population that purchases your products. We find it unconscionable that you walked out of negotiations on August 13th, 2008 and have refused to meet with the workers of the Stella D'oro Plant located on 237th Street and Broadway in Bronx, NY. The workers have been on strike since then and now you have resorted to union busting and are hiring scabs to run the plant.
Brynwood Partner's demands are draconian. You want, among other things, that workers accept a 25% cut in wages; the elimination of Saturday overtime; and an increase in health insurance premiums. You also propose eliminating four holidays, one week of vacation, and all 12 paid sick days the workers currently receive.
Until Stella D'oro and Brynwood Partners sit and negotiate with the workers I will support the strike by boycotting ALL Stella D'oro products. The workers must receive a fair settlement of their grievances.

Dear Friends,Thank you very much for your leadership in fighting to maintain astrong healthcare system in New York.
Here in the Bronx together we have been able to keep our neighbors, organizations, and state representatives informed about our concernsand the need for everyone, including those who are best prepared tocontribute, about our proposal for shared sacrifices during these hardeconomic times; fair share reform.
We are deeply concerned that today, March 10, 2009 the Senate may be deciding to restore very little of the Governor’s proposed cuts to health care services. Your active outreach today to your Senator is critical.
Get connected to your senator in three easy steps by going to www.fairsharereform.com/senatebill.
Or
Call your State Senator Today and let them know that in times likethis all New Yorkers must be asked to pay their fair share.
• I am deeply concerned that the Senate may be considering goingalong with much of Governor Paterson’s dangerous cuts to quality carein New York. The senate cannot pass a one house bill withoutincreasing revenue.
• It is vital to my community that the Senate fully restores theMedicaid cuts to health care providers in New York. And use thefederal assistance available to New York State over the next twoyears. There is no excuse for allowing cuts to go through that willhurt patients and threaten care.
It is vitally important for our families and communities that we betimely and let our voices be heard now. Thank you again for your leadership.

ACTION ALERT
ONE NEW YORK and Partnership for the Homeless are calling on you to:
Call the legislature this week!
WE DID IT! On Thursday, more than 70,000 people packed the streets of lower Manhattan, sending a loud and clear message to Governor Paterson and the legislature: We need Fair Share Tax Reform! We were joined by thousands of other people in rallies across New York State.
Now we need to "SEAL THE DEAL." Both the Senate and Assembly are finalizing their budget resolutions - making this a crucial week for ensuring that Fair Share Tax Reform is part of the budget.
ACTION STEPS:·
Call your own legislators - both senators and assemblymembers - as well as legislators with whom you or your organization have relationships
MESSAGE and ASK:·
The federal government stepped up to the plate, but the stimulus doesn't solve the crisis alone - the state must now do its share!
· Support Fair Share Tax Reform in the state budget
· The policy should increase the income tax rate for those earning $250,000 and more, raising an estimated $6 billion a year
Call NOW and FORWARD this alert widely!
